Doggy Treats

The Rottweiler-Chow cross was unavailable for comment.

From the Liverpool Echo:
A GRAN who was caught on camera having sex with the family dog was spared jail. Police found 33 photographs of Paula Mangan, 42, in sexual positions with the Rottweiler-Chow cross dog after raiding her home in Huyton.

Mum-of-two and gran-of-one Mangan initially denied the pictures were of her, as they did not show her face. But when experts uncovered further images which clearly identified her, she admitted her guilt.

Mangan, now of Parkview Drive, Netherley, admitted having sex with the animal.

...

David McLachlan, prosecuting, said officers discovered the images after raiding the home Mangan shared with her partner Lee McCall on January 11, 2009.

McCall, 41, also of Parkview Drive pleaded guilty to 13 counts of making indecent images and will be sentenced on April 18.
As far as one can see from the details in the Echo, this lady did some foolish things with the family dog, while her partner took some photographs.

Do we really prosecute people for this?

  3. Wikipedia says:

"Anal and vaginal penetration of or by an animal is illegal, and carries a sentence of up to 2 years imprisonment. Historically an unspecified range of acts were illegal, however the Sexual Offences Act 2003 which followed a major review of all sexual offences in UK law clarified this, removing the ambiguous activities from the scope of the law, and changing the sentence from life imprisonment (which had been criticized as over-harsh) to two years.

Possession of pornography was criminalised in the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008. The law on pornography is broader than that of actual acts: it also covers oral sex; it applies to dead animals as well as living; images are illegal even if they are faked. Thus an image of a legal act may be illegal to possess. The first prosecutions for bestiality pornography occurred in 2009."

    So now you know.

  4. I don't think I find it terribly disappointing that this is illegal behaviour, in all honesty. Life imprisonment does seem a bit extreme, though, unless you get to serve it at Battersea Dogs Home rather than Holloway...

...and I'm really not sure I ever need to know what was covered by "ambiguous activities"...

  5. It's pretty horrible to my tastes, but unless there is cruelty to the animal, I'm not sure I can see a good reason for it to be illegal.

I haven't given this a great deal of thought over the years, I have to admit.

  7. "...and I'm really not sure I ever need to know what was covered by "ambiguous activities"..."

It sounds like a legalese catch-all for 'we haven't seen it yet, but just in case, you filthy, filthy perverts...'

  8. Nothing in my browser history that I can't justify on research grounds! "All human life is there."

As to the 'ambiguous activities', since the debate is between normal sex and bestiality, I can only assume that the ambiguous activities were something unclassifiable in between, like blowing a kiss at an Alsatian or fondling an emu, but not in that way.

  9. As a result of your post I've just read the Act and apparently sex is legal with a dead animal (though not with a human corpse). Ew! If the law is based on morality, I would have thought that sex with a dead animal is just as immoral.
I bet the debates were well attended in Parliament.

  10. Ew, indeed.

Nuff said on this, I think.
